Gravel Bags Calculator
Work out how many bags of gravel you need for a small project. Pick your bag size and the result shows the bag count. It starts with a 10 × 6 ft bed, 2 inches deep.
1. Measure your area
2. Choose your gravel
Gravel density varies by material, moisture and supplier. Use your supplier's stated density when available. This calculator provides an estimate, not a supplier quote.
How many bags of gravel do I need?
Bagged gravel is sold either by weight, commonly 40 or 50 lb, or by volume, commonly 0.5 cubic feet. To find the number of bags, work out the volume you need, add a waste allowance, then divide by the size of one bag. The calculator above does it for you: pick your bag size and the result shows the bag count.
Worked example: a 10 × 6 ft bed at 2 inches
Area: 10 ft × 6 ft = 60 sq ft
Volume at 2 inches deep: 60 × (2 ÷ 12) = 10.00 cubic feet; with 10% waste = 11.00 cubic feet
Weight of pea gravel at 105 lb per cubic foot: 1,155 lb
In 50-lb bags: 1,155 ÷ 50 = 24 bags. In 0.5 cubic foot bags: 11.00 ÷ 0.5 = 22 bags.
Bags needed per 100 square feet
Pea gravel at 105 lb per cubic foot, with no waste allowance. Round up and add 10% for real jobs.
| Depth | 50-lb bags | 0.5 cu ft bags |
|---|---|---|
| 1 inch | 18 | 17 |
| 2 inches | 35 | 34 |
| 3 inches | 53 | 50 |
| 4 inches | 70 | 67 |
Bag size varies, so check the label
A bag sold as 0.5 cubic feet can weigh anywhere from about 40 to 60 lb, depending on the stone and how wet it is. The calculator lets you choose between weight-based and volume-based bags, so match it to what is printed on the bag you plan to buy.
Bags or bulk?
Bags suit small jobs: easy to carry, easy to store, no delivery. The cost per ton is usually much higher than bulk, and handling many bags is hard work. As a rough guide, once you need more than a few hundred pounds, ask a local supplier for a bulk price, and remember to ask about the delivery fee before comparing. The gravel cost guide explains how to compare.
Frequently asked questions
How many 50-lb bags of gravel are in a ton?
40 bags. A ton is 2,000 lb, and 2,000 ÷ 50 = 40.
How many bags of gravel do I need for 100 square feet?
At 2 inches deep, about 35 bags of 50-lb pea gravel, or 34 bags of 0.5 cubic feet, before allowing for waste. The table above lists other depths.
How many 0.5 cubic foot bags make a cubic yard?
54 bags, because a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet and 27 ÷ 0.5 = 54.
Is bagged gravel more expensive than bulk?
Per ton, usually yes, often by a wide margin. Bags make sense for small jobs. For larger areas, get a delivered price for bulk and compare.
Should I buy extra bags?
Yes, add about 10%. It is easier to return an unopened bag than to go back for one more.
