How much does a cubic yard of gravel weigh?

A cubic yard of gravel typically weighs between about 2,700 and 3,000 lb, which is roughly 1.4 to 1.5 tons. The exact figure depends on the type of stone, the size of the pieces, how much dust and fine material is mixed in, and how wet it is. The table below shows the typical densities this calculator uses.

How to convert between tons and cubic yards

To go from cubic yards to tons, multiply by the weight of one cubic yard in tons. To go from tons to cubic yards, divide by it. For crushed stone at about 1.5 tons per cubic yard, 10 tons is about 6.7 cubic yards, and 5 cubic yards is about 7.4 tons. The calculator above shows both units for any size of project, so you do not need to convert by hand.

Why the weight varies

Which number should I trust?

Your supplier's number. Many quarries publish a weight per cubic yard for each product, and delivery tickets are written by weight. If you know the exact density, choose Custom density in the calculator and enter it in pounds per cubic foot (divide pounds per cubic yard by 27).

Frequently asked questions

How many cubic yards are in a ton of gravel?

About 0.67 to 0.74 cubic yards, depending on the material. Crushed stone is about 0.67 and pea gravel about 0.7.

How much does a cubic foot of gravel weigh?

Roughly 100 to 110 lb for common loose gravel.

How many cubic yards in a dump truck load?

It depends on the truck, so ask the supplier. A ten-ton load is roughly 7 cubic yards of typical gravel, and many trucks carry more than that.

Does wet gravel weigh more?

Yes. Water adds weight, so a delivery after rain can weigh more than the same volume of dry stone. This is one reason suppliers quote by weight.

Is a ton of gravel the same as a cubic yard?

No. A cubic yard is a volume and a ton is a weight. One cubic yard of gravel weighs about 1.4 to 1.5 tons.
